Sakate Khaitan

Sakate is the senior partner at Khaitan Legal Associates. Sakate divides his time between London and Mumbai.
Sakate heads the corporate M&A, funds, restructuring and insurance practice at Khaitan Legal Associates. Sakate advises clients on inward investments into India and on an array of India-focused cross border transactions. Having started his career in litigation, Sakate has over 11 years of litigation experience advising various clients in their disputes that included high profile joint venture disputes, tax disputes and disputes with regulators. Sakate also serves on the boards of several companies as a non-executive director, lending his legal and business acumen to businesses around the globe. Sakate assists clients with pragmatic and commercially sound advice on dealing with Indian rules and regulations. His clients include multinationals, private equity funds, financial institutions, fund managers, and HNIs.

In his experience that spans over two decades Sakate demonstrates a deep commercial understanding of several industry sectors and significant transactional insights that offer immense value to the client.

Sakate is the alumnus of London Business School (“LBS”) and is also the co-founder of the India Business Forum (“IBF”) at LBS. The IBF is a platform that was created to build awareness and facilitate discussions on and encourage cross border investments to/from India.

Sakate is dual qualified and is a member of the Bar Council of India and is also admitted as a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales. However, he exclusively practices Indian law.

Varsha Jalan

Varsha is an Associate Partner based in the Mumbai office of Khaitan Legal Associates.
Varsha regularly advises foreign and domestic clients on various aspects of Indian education laws – primary & secondary education and higher education, both technical and non-technical.
In addition, Varsha is a corporate generalist and regularly advises on corporate law and has assisted several foreign entities in establishing their India presence. She advises clients on general corporate matters, cross border transactions including exchange control matters, corporate documentation, entry strategies, formation of companies (public, private and foreign subsidiaries in India) and joint venture companies and conducting due diligence.

Dhiraj Mhetre

Partner
Dhiraj is a partner based in the Mumbai office of Khaitan Legal Associates and heads the Dispute Resolution practice of the firm.
Dhiraj has graduated from ILS Law College, Pune and holds a Diploma in IPR from Asian School of Cyber Laws, Pune and an Online Certification Course on IP Laws, WIPO. In his decade long experience, Dhiraj has represented several renowned corporate houses, in respect of commercial, contractual, debt recovery, insolvency, and intellectual property related disputes. He specializes in pre and post-dispute resolution strategies and has handled several high-stake commercial disputes before courts and tribunals across India.

Shruti Dvivedi Sodhi

Shruti is a partner based in the Delhi office of Khaitan Legal Associates, a full service law firm committed to forging a new era in the practice and service of law. She heads the Delhi Office and leads the TMT, Start up and Data Protection practices for the firm. She is also part of the finance practice

and regularly advises fund in their investment in the Start up and TMT space.
Prior to joining KLA, Shruti has worked across leading law firms, multinational organizations and a niche consulting outfit that she founded in 2016. During her time at Bharti Airtel, Hewitt Associates (Aon), American Express, Colt and Aircel, she led several path breaking projects in the various accountabilities she held including the Bharti-IBM strategic IT outsourcing multi-billion-dollar deal, which got recognition at Harvard Business School and is now a case-study there; established ‘Legal Centre of Excellence’ for Colt Worldwide, in India; was instrumental in Amex foray of digital payments in India; and developing and deploying a  robust governance  mechanism establishing crucial controls and management reporting.
Her 26 years of experience as a lawyer is a culmination of working across various genres including funds, Start-Ups, FMCG, BFSI, IT, telecommunications, private equity and venture capital, general corporate and compliance.
Shruti also supports various initiatives including the Government of India initiative of Start-Up India and mentors State cohorts of Haryana, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and the Gujarat Student Start-Up and Innovation Hub. She is also an impact champion at Wadhwani Foundation, a philanthropic organization supporting MSMEs.
Shruti is a visiting faculty member at MICA, Ahmedabad where she teaches legal aspects of business. She has been ranked in India’s top 100 women in Finance – 2020, by Association of International Wealth Management of India.

Prabodh Chander

Prabodh Chander is a senior consultant with the insurance group of Khaitan Legal Associates.
Prabodh Chander is a former executive director of the Indian insurance regulator, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (“IRDA”) and Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (“PFRDA”) and has been associated with the Indian insurance industry for over three decades. He is presently an Advocate enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi and is also a qualified Arbitrator and Mediator.

He started his career in the insurance industry with New India Assurance Co Ltd in 1977 and has worked in various fields of general insurance before he joined IRDA in 1996. During his tenure at IRDA (March 1996 to November 2010) including a brief stint of deputation to the PFRDA, he led the IRDA team in formative years to establish the Indian regulatory systems, rules and regulations. He has also extensively travelled abroad for training and study of foreign jurisdictions in the fields of financial and insurance supervision. He has represented IRDA on various committees internally and to the Government including other regulatory bodies.

Prabodh Chander played an important part in different departments and functions of IRDA inter alia including (a) licensing of insurance carriers and all other insurance intermediaries (b) practical interpretation and application of insurance law – regulations and guidelines; (c) functional areas of general insurance including re-insurance and regulatory oversight of the life insurance business; and (d) regulatory supervision and guidance.

Prabodh Chander continues to be associated with different causes of the insurance industry and lends his expertise as an independent consultant to insurers, intermediaries and representative bodies in the insurance sector. He divides his time between New Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Abbas Jaorawala

Abbas is a chartered accountant with experience of over ten years in direct taxation (domestic and cross-border / international taxation) and exchange control regulations.
Abbas has advised several foreign and domestic clients on matters relating to direct tax. He regularly works with international clients looking at India entry as well as clients looking at inorganic expansion. Abbas teams up with other professionals like lawyers and also works independently on mandates.

Prior to foraying in independent practice, Abbas spent four years with a leading national accounting and tax firm of India.

Abbas has extensive experience in bringing sound technical knowledge to assignments whether compliance or advisory and meeting client’s objectives.

He has conducted various internal and external presentations / trainings on technical topics and his articles have been published by leading journals and media houses such as Taxmann, Taxsutra, Bloomberg Quint and International tax review.

Bipul Khanduri is a senior professional with an experience of over three decades in insurance industry. Bipul has worked with both, the Government as well as the private sector in the insurance sector where his roles have varied from operations, underwriting and reinsurance to claims management. He has extensive experience in underwriting, contract negotiation in claims management, claims litigation and arbitration and other insurance advisory.
He has worked with Oriental Insurance, Tata AIG, and HDFC Ergo General Insurance Companies. He has also worked with HSBC and Aon.
Bipul graduated in Agricultural Sciences and Animal Husbandry from GB Pant University of Agriculture & Technology. He read law at Garhwal University and management at the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.

Manish Rajani

Manish Rajani is a lawyer specialising in Real Estate Laws in India. Manish did his law schooling from the prestigious Government Law College at Mumbai. He is enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa. Manish is also enrolled as a non-practising Solicitor in the Senior Courts of England and Wales.
Manish has worked with reputed law firms in Mumbai where he specialised in Infrastructure Project Finance, Real Estate laws and general corporate transactions. Manish practised Infrastructure Project Finance while he was working with a leading law firm in Mumbai. During his project finance practice, Manish has advised lenders as well as borrowers on various legal issues relating to banking and financing of infrastructure projects involving road, power, hospital, Oil & Gas, port projects etc.

In another internationally reputed law firm, Manish has handled various corporate and real estate matters including amalgamation of companies, advising on sale and purchase of immovable properties, title investigation of flats and land, advising various land owners/housing societies and developers in development/re-development projects, due-diligence for private equity investments, leasing / licensing documentation of commercial and residential properties etc.

Since April 2011, Manish commenced independent practice with an aim to carve a niche for himself in the legal industry. Sanjeev Singhal

Sanjeev Singhal is a banking professional with over four decades of domestic and international experience in corporate and retail banking across diverse facets like project finance, credit dispensation, stressed asset management/resolution, Rupee treasury – investments, IT, foreign exchange, business development, strategic planning and the like.
He has worked with the State Bank of India (SBI) for over 36 years. Since retiring in 2011, Sanjeev worked in an advisory capacity with SBI, SBI Capital Markets within the infrastructure sector as well as L&T Infra Finance.
Over the years, he has gained extensive experience in financing projects that range from a few million rupees to several billion within the energy, including renewable energy, telecom, PPP/ transport projects, urban infrastructure, steel, aluminium, hospitality and commercial real estate sectors.
Sanjeev continues to lend his expertise to various corporates and firms as a consultant and advisor in finance and other areas.
